How to Be Your Own Boss & Take Charge of Your Career? #BYOB

In the early 2000s, many people thought the highest aspiration was to work for companies such as Apple, Google, GE, or even Facebook but in the last few years, a new career choice has shot out, eclipsing traditional forms of employment – working for themselves.

Sometimes 9 to 5s can be confining. Are you one of those who hate routines that gets monotonous after a while? Are you a millennial graduating from college soon looking to get your first “real job” jumpstarting your adulting but not sure if being boxed into a cubicle is the right way to go? If you are the kind of person who is eager to beat the odds and loves thinking outside the box, have you ever thought about being your own boss?

You are ready for change, but you have no idea where to start? Or maybe you have been toying with some plans, but you still not sure how to pull it together? So, no matter what your goals and current situation are, this guide may be able to help you along the way to becoming your own boss.

So, what do you want to do? Set up an online start-up? A hands-on job like carpentry, florist? Or are you interested in providing creative services such as designing websites or merchandises? Or how about contractual positions that give you discipline but allows you to manage your own schedule?

Start with a brainstorming process. Search for ideas and put your plans down on a paper. Think about the lows and the highs, the positives and the negatives that could come out of the plan. Determine your strengths and weaknesses. Where can you get some training? Writing down your plans would help you see the bigger picture and encourage you to take some action.

Brainstorming session – check. Great idea – check. Your plan is going to change everything, err….. are you sure? Keeping in mind, that every day, millions of people come up with great ideas, what can you do to hedge your idea ahead of theirs? Validate your idea! It is like a deep dive survey, that will help you understand what the market likes. See if anyone else understands your drawings.

Speak to a mentor, colleague oradvisor. Create a focus group or crowdsource for opinion to test your business idea – this method is accessible and inexpensive. Also, another highly suggested move that we must include here is – to talk to other people who have had similar ideas or who have invested in similar field/industry.

Look, we know it is not easy to make the changes and move immediately to your plans. A lot of people like having a safety net to fall back on. So maybe it might be a good idea to work on the initial stages of becoming your own boss gradually. Start with preliminary basics – get your funds in order, plan your start date, get some training in, simulate the business operations with a friend, set your target and prepare your marketing plan.

But for those who are ready for the jump and have decided it’s time to quit your ‘day job’, don’t look back – just start devoting your energy to making your new venture a success. You will also have a little bit more ‘fire’ under you than usual prompting you to work extra hard.

No matter what you decide – take one day at a time.

Now, this is the most important step in starting out on your own – be flexible. The key to being your own boss is to check your ego at the door and listen to feedback and market sway. Be ready to adapt and change direction if something is not working out. Also remember, the world these days lives on trends, so following them can help you make better forecasting.

However, do note that staying flexible does not mean reacting to every customer’s opinion or current trends. Do your research, talk to people and then plan your action – basically, start STEP 1 – STEP 3 again.

So, all in all, being your own boss depends on your current financial state, the type of business you plan to start, and your own self-awareness when it comes to your working habits. It may not always be easy, but your success is right there in your own hands and there’s no other feeling like it. Live each day knowing you will one day accomplish those goals and keep your focus on the outcome of those accomplishments.
