When it comes to getting results, it takes motivation and ability. Motivation can make things happen. And self-motivation is, in its simplest form, the force that drives you to do things.
But how do you motivate yourself? What are the things that can make you self-motivated? In this article, we will share with you three (3) tips that we have found to be effective in building self-motivation. But before we delve into that, let’s take a look at the ‘science’ behind self-motivation, through one popular theory that drives motivation in people, and that is called Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.

Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is one of the best-known theories of motivation. According to humanist psychologist Abraham Maslow, our actions are motivated in order to achieve certain needs, as you see it in the hierarchical levels within the Maslow Pyramid, starting with – physiological, safety, love/belong, esteem, and self-actualisation.
The very base of human need is physiological – such as the need for sleep, food, air, and reproduction. The ability to work our way further up the hierarchy, to satisfy our more complex needs, is based on fulfilling the physiological needs.
At the very top is self-actualisation needs, where it refers to the need for personal growth and discovery that is present throughout a person’s life. In self-actualisation, a person comes to find a meaning to life that is important to them.
As each individual is unique, the motivation for self-actualisation leads people in different directions For some people self-actualisation can be achieved through creating works of art or literature, for others through sport, in the classroom, or within a corporate setting.
Now that we know what self-actualisation is, what does it look like?
Some self-actualisation examples are when a father who gets a sense of purpose from raising his children to be a positive force in the world, or even an artist who has never made a profit on his art, but he still paints because it is fulfilling and makes him happy.
To obtain that level of happiness, here are three (3) simple tips that we feel can be effective in helping you find self-motivation.
First, keep and surround yourself with positive friends. Be around those that will support and build you up and avoid those that will always try and tear you down. The second tip is to use visual motivators. An inspirational quote or a poster can keep you focused on changes you’re trying to make in your life. A cartoon or a joke can also help keep you from taking things too seriously. Given that many of us are glued to our phone screens every day, we recommend trying out ThinkUp: Positive Affirmations. Play Trivial Pursuit or watch Jeopardy. Learn something new every day. There are no such things as useless facts. If it is part of our world, then it is worth knowing.
